           "In Quiet Places"

I look for answers in quiet places,

Beyond the sadness of a stranger's face,

As the world fractures into pieces

Of terror, and I am shaken

As I realize how fragile life really is;

And yet the vein of iron courage runs

Deeper than the roaring of the winds,

In these people, these brave Americans.

But still, beyond the fear, beyond the pain,

As I look for answers

In hungry eyes and plastic smiles,

Still, I linger in the dark, the chaos of my mind,

And search for you –

But the shadows, like floodwater, forever hide your heart.

So as I see my own mortality in blood soaked refugees,

Hear the death rattle of quakes that rock the world,

That shake all my beliefs, I think of you

And the uncertainty of life and love;

For time is but a fragile hour,

And we all fall victim to that truth

As it descends on death black wings

In an instant, changing us –

It changes everything.

This poem is dedicated to the victims of Hurricane Katrina; our thoughts are always with you, just as you are always in our hearts.
